At Creative Eye Workshops™, we teach the fundamentals of photography so that students can think for themselves. Our philosophy is to help students build confidence and knowledge so they can take control of their cameras without worry, freeing their minds to photograph the things they love most. Like our name suggests, we provide you with the tutelage and the tools to help you discover and express your creative eye.
Internationally published photographer and your photography teacher, Mike MacDonald.
Our students come from all walks of life, with every level of technical and creative expertise. And we understand that people are often fearful of technology, afraid of their cameras. That’s why we concentrate on building confidence as much as knowledge.
Sarah wrote, “For someone like me, who previously used my digital camera on all automatic settings and was fearful of the ‘unknowns’ my camera had to offer (always afraid I might touch some mysterious button by mistake), I find myself now in this wonderful place…feeling totally at ease with my camera and having the time of my life exploring and finding my own personal style.”

Regardless of what you like to photograph, we offer a wide array of photography classes and learning adventures to satisfy all levels of photographers, from digital camera classes and courses in photo composition to classes in exposure, Photoshop Elements, nature photography workshops, and private photography lessons. What’s more, you can save money with our workshop packages.
Our experience shows that learning the fundamental principles of photography will prepare you for the real world, so you can think on your feet and get you ready to photograph anything you want, whether that means photographing your grandkids or your golden retriever, becoming a fine-art landscape photographer, or starting a business in portrait photography. We teach both technical and creative photography techniques, as well as many advanced skills.
Our more advanced classes include courses in photographic exposure, Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, digital printmaking, and landscape and nature photography.
Gain the confidence and knowledge to take perfect pictures when it really counts.
For the beginner photographer, it’s important to concentrate on building confidence just as much as knowledge. For starters, beginners can take a basic, but inspirational, course in photographic composition or a powerful digital camera class designed to free you from the worry and constraints of shooting in unpredictable automatic and “point-and-shoot” modes. After completing our core photography curriculum, you should confidently be able to apply what you’ve learned to any area of photography that you decide to pursue.
Michele W. from Bolingbrook wrote us after starting a dance photography business, “I tried two other photography courses before I found Mike; his approach to teaching is unique, but amazing. Concepts are presented in a manner that is easy to understand and helps the student learn quickly. I originally planned to just take an introductory course, but learned so much I ended up signing up for nearly every class he offered. Thanks to Mike I now have my own photography business, specializing in dance photography.”
Our hands-on photo outings help students practice what they’ve learned in class. Here are two intrepid students at our springtime outing to Starved Rock State Park.
Our photography courses consist of visual presentations and hands-on lessons. We’ve design computer animations and intuitive graphics to help students better visualize and absorb information. We also provide comprehensive class notes, comprising a rerun of the class, allowing you to re-read the material between sessions or to refresh your memory long after the class is over. During each class, you’ll also receive insightful emails to help summarize, supplement, or solidify what you just learned.
Our photography curriculum is thoughtful and structured to accommodate busy schedules. Our classes our practical and efficient, and don’t require an extended commitment. Instead of offering classes that extend for months, we break them into more manageable, bite-sized classes, offering a handful of shorter courses to better fit your busy schedule. We pride ourselves in getting to the bottom of things quickly. We do this by teaching you what you need to know, when you need to know it, rather than frustrating you with loads of irrelevant topics that you’re not ready for.
Mike MacDonald, the founder of Creative Eye Workshops™, has degrees in mathematics and physics, and careers in scientific programming and professional comedy. Self-taught, Mike took on photography as a hobby, and success came quickly. A year-and-a-half into his hobby, his work was nationally recognized in an article about how to photograph ice, published in Outdoor Photographer Magazine. Watch an interview with Mike on WTTW Chicago Tonight.
As a photography instructor, Mike uses his communication skills as a comedian and author to convey intimidating material in a organized and lighthearted manner. He uses his training in mathematics and computer programming to break down and convey complex information into easy-to-understand pieces. Yet, it is Mike’s energy and passion that makes him stand out them most, inspiring his students to be their best.
