Split Grad Filter Secrets

Conveniently Located in Downers Grove

For: Intermediate & Advanced Photographers

Requirements: DSLR Camera & Tripod    (View Course Requirements)

Prerequisites: Get to Know Your Camera & Complete Exposure

Have you ever wondered why your skies keep getting washed out in your landscape photos? It’s because the sky is so much brighter than the land that the sensor cannot record the entire exposure range. A split graduated neutral density filter is used to balance the exposures.

The split grad filter is the most important filter in landscape photography because, when the light is at its best, it’s also the most challenging. Doh!

This is why quality landscape photography is impossible without the use of a either a split grad filter or by processing multiple exposures with special exposure blending software like Photomatix. Both tools give excellent results, but split grads are easy because you can fix the problem while you’re in the field. Plus, it’s not always possible to use software because multiple exposures of a scene require near perfect alignment and the wind is frequently moving your subjects around.

In this Split Grad Filter Secrets hands-on workshop, Mike teaches you his secrets for using a split grad filter while minimizing the evidence of the filter’s use. It’s astonishing how many pictures by “top” nature photographers noticeably demonstrate sloppy split grad work.

With this class, you will receive comprehensive lecture notes so you have a reference guide after you’ve taken the class.  (Gift Cards for this class are available.)

Course Agenda

If you don’t already own split grad filters, you’ll need to purchase them before the class. Please read the Course Requirements before applying to see if you qualify and to learn which filters to buy. You can get your filters from B&H PHOTO in New York City at very good prices.

The class begins at Mike’s home and studio in Downers Grove, Illinois (a Chicago suburb) where Mike will disclose his split grad filter secrets in an animated PowerPoint presentation. You will receive a comprehensive handout of the presentation. After the lecture, we will then head out to a park in the late afternoon to practice using split grad filters.

The class will be limited to a small number of participants so you can get the attention you require. So please register quickly to insure a spot.
